Melanie Hathaway Mayes has been playing volleyball for almost 20 years and wanted to pass on her passion for the game by coaching. She started playing volleyball at the club level when she was in sixth grade. She played for Central Coast Volleyball Club in Santa Maria then for SLO Jrs.Volleyball Club in San Luis Obispo. She was a Volleyball Magazine "Fab 50" selection and decided to play college at Cal Poly under Steve Schlick and Marlon Sano. She helped with the resurgence of the Mustang volleyball program with three berths into the NCAA Tournament, and her senior year was an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention. She then was asked to join the U.S. National Women's Volleyball Team where she played under coach Toshi Yoshida.
Melanie graduated from Cal Poly in 2001, got married to her husband Jeremiah Mayes and had two children, Lucas, and Ali. Melanie seeks to teach her athletes a passion for the game and how to play it with integrity. She also wants to teach them the importance of teamwork and how to build relationships that will last a lifetime.
